If you enjoy working with your hands, learning in teams, and watching your effort and commitment come to life through your work, IYRS School of Technology & Trades may be a good fit for your educational journey. Here, you'll have the opportunity to build and restore wooden boats, learn advanced design and fabrication skills, or train to become an in-demand marine technician. Learn Boatbuilding & Woodworking

In our Boatbuilding & Restoration program, you'll work alongside expert woodworkers and boatbuilders to learn the trade from the very beginning. In this two-year program, you'll work collaboratively on hands-on projects to develop your practical skills and experience the pride of restoring two boats from start to finish. At the end of each year, you'll get to launch and sail your restored boat in Newport Harbor.

Experience the Design and Fabrication Process

Our Digital Modeling & Fabrication program gives you a foundation of knowledge to design, create models, test your theories, and build a final prototype to bring your vision to life. You'll learn how to use industry-standard design software and build your proficiency through a variety of advanced fabrication techniques.

At the end of the program, you'll complete a capstone project where you'll use your knowledge and experience to design and build a project of your choosing. We encourage you to design something meaningful to you, and we're excited to see what you can create!

Become a Certified Composites Technician

Become a Certified Composites Technician. This accredited program will teach you to design and build with advanced materials and prepare you to take the highest level composites certification. You'll work with expert faculty who have decades of experience in the field and learn not only to build but how to design and create your own concepts through digital drawings. We promote hands-on learning with a capstone project to design your own work and explore your passion.

Transform Your Passion for Boating Into a Career

Our Marine Systems program prepares you to seamlessly enter the marine industry as a systems technician in just six months. You'll build working simulation panels from start to finish and learn to install, repair, and troubleshoot all aspects of both stand-alone and fully integrated boat systems and the inner workings of power and sailboats.

Through this program, you will also take the following certification exams:

  • ABYC Marine Electrical Certification
  • ABYC Marine Systems Certification
  • ABYC Marine Engines and Fuel Systems Certification
  • NMEA Basic Marine Electronics Installer
  • Basic NMEA 2000 Installer
  • Yamaha Introduction to Outboard Systems

We're located in the heart of Newport, Rhode Island, with 945 linear feet of dock space and 600 linear feet of waterfront for you to enjoy. IYRS has Newport business district's only nonprofit working waterfront.
